Monster Jokes and Sasquatch Squares: A spooky, delicious time for the whole family around the Beavers Bend

The changing autumn leaves blanket Beavers Bend in October, creating a beautiful landscape for hiking and exploring Beavers Bend during the day. With the kids on fall break, it’s a great time for families to escape to nature and bond over woodsy adventures. As the sun starts dipping below the horizon a little earlier, there may be less time at the lake, but that means more opportunity for creating cozy moments inside. Halloween is just around the corner, and those luxury cabins in the woods—with their firepits, furnished kitchens, and towering trees—provide the ideal conditions for a spooky good time.

Few things are more fun than sitting around a campfire with family and friends spinning spooky yarns about things that go bump in the night. If you don’t have any scary stories up your sleeve, get the group to create a uniquely scary story by starting with one detail, then letting each person add a terrifying twist. In Beavers Bend, legends of Bigfoot are often told around the fire—the subtle sounds from the surrounding forest and the crackle of the flames will add an eerie ambience to any tale.

For a younger crowd, monster jokes are always a hit! A bevy of bad jokes can be found online, and there are many books devoted to monster joke humor. See how many eye-rolls you get with this one:

Who did Frankenstein take to the dance? His ghoul friend!

The season brings plenty of tricks, but Halloween would be nothing without the treats. Most luxury cabins around the Beavers Bend include a full kitchen with everything needed to whip up something sweet. Before a scary movie marathon, round up the kiddos for a Bigfoot baking project.

Sasquatch Squares are a creative Beavers Bend twist on the ever-popular crisped rice treat. Ingredients are inexpensive, interchangeable, and can be found not too far from your cabin at Pruett’s Grocery in Broken Bow—putting the treats together is a breeze. Duties like measuring the cereal or mixing all the ingredients together are great for tiny hands. The recipe also comes together quickly, so your little goblins won’t have to wait long to gobble them up.

Made with chocolate Rice Krispies, dark chocolate chips, pretzels & dried cranberries.

Sasquatch Squares

(makes approximately 10 squares)

3 Tbsp Butter

10 oz package mini marshmallows

3.5 cups Rice Krispies

1/4 cup pretzels, crushed into pieces

1/2 cup dried blueberries (or any preferred dried berry, like cherries or cranberries!)

1/4 cup chocolate chips (white chocolate chips are great, too!)

  1. Mix all dry ingredients except the marshmallows into a large bowl.
  2. Spray a 9 x 11 baking pan with cooking spray, or use a paper towel to put a light coating of oil all over the pan. Set aside.
  3. On the stove, melt the butter first; then add marshmallows. Stir until everything is combined. Pro tip: spray spoon with a little oil to keep the mixture from sticking, making stirring easier!
  4. Pour marshmallow butter mixture onto the dry ingredients while still warm and melty. Stir to completely coat all the ingredients.
  5. Pour combined mixture into the oiled baking pan. Use the back of a spoon or spatula to flatten evenly across the pan.
  6. Let cool completely. Then, cut with a knife into desired serving sizes.
